Officials Tour South River Tunnel

On Friday, January 29, Chief Operating Officer Peter Aman and DWM Commissioner Robert Hunter led Congressman John Lewis, several City Council members and staffers on a tour of the South River Tunnel Project. Councilpersons Carla Smith, Natalyn Archibong, Michael Julian Bond, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Felicia Moore, Alex Wan and Aaron Watson were on hand to tour the 180-foot-deep construction shaft and tunnel entrance. Work crews spent the past year digging construction shafts; now, they have lowered and are assembling the tunnel boring machine (TBM) that will drill 24/7 through approximately 9,000 feet of rock to create the 14-foot finished diameter tunnel. The project, slated for completion in July 2011, will transport sanitary sewer overflows to a dedicated pumping station at the South River Water Reclamation Center.
