South River Tunnel Project has begun

Construction has begun on the South River Tunnel and Pump Station as part of the City's Sanitary Sewer Overflow program in the South River Basin. The South River tunnel will collect flow from existing sanitary sewers and transport it to a newly constructed pump station at the South River Water Reclamation Center.

The new tunnel will be 9,000 feet long with a 14-foot finished diameter and will extend from the South River WRC to Macon Drive at the South River Bridge.

The project will include:

- Two construction shafts
- Three intake structures and drop shafts
- 1,200 feet of connecting tunnels
- Drop shafts and chambers to transfer flows from the existing sewer to the tunnel

GSC Atlanta Inc., a subsidiary of Kiewit Southern Company, is the contractor for the project. Clearing operations have already begun and will be followed by additional site setup with grading and sound walls. The consent decree deadline for the completion of the tunnel and pump station is July 1, 2011.
