Stop Leaks! Give Your Toilet Regular Checkups

DWM reminds its customers that toilet leaks waste hundreds of gallons of water every day. EPA estimates that leaky toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons of water a day and as much as 7,000 gallons a month. When you consider that EPA considers 6,000 gallons of water per month to be the average four-person household use, you can understand the problem!

The good news is that toilet leaks are easy to diagnose and fix. Simply put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 10 minutes. If the water in the bowl is colored, you have a leak.

Most toilet leaks are the result of deteriorated flappers and aging outflow tubes that are simple and inexpensive to repair. Check out www.doity ourself.com/stry/identifyandfixtoi letleak.

Also, remember unnecessary flushes can waste up to five gallons of water per flush. Don't use your toilet as a trash can.

Finally, if you haven't already taken advantage of the City's toilet rebate program, there's no time like the present! The City is offering $100 and $50 rebates to customers who replace their toilets with newer low-flow and ultra-low-flow models. To qualify, you must be a City of Atlanta water/sewer customer whose home was built prior to 1993.
