DWM reminds its customers that toilet leaks waste hundreds of gallons of water every day. EPA estimates that leaky toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons of water a day and as much as 7,000 gallons a month. When you consider that EPA considers 6,000 gallons of water per month to be the average four-person household use, you can understand the problem!

The good news is that toilet leaks are easy to diagnose and fix. Simply put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 10 minutes. If the water in the bowl is colored, you have a leak.

Also, remember unnecessary flushes can waste up to five gallons of water per flush. Don't use your toilet as a trash can.

Finally, if you haven't already taken advantage of the City's toilet rebate program, there's no time like the present! The City is offering $100 and $50 rebates to customers who replace their toilets with newer low-flow and ultra-low-flow models.
