Mayor and Commissioner
Attend Water Hearing in Florida

On May 11, Mayor Shirley Franklin and DWM Commissioner Robert Hunter attended a four-hour court hearing concerning Georgia's right to use Lake Lanier as a water source. Attorneys for the State of Georgia argued that legislation creating Lake Lanier clearly envisioned the lake as a water resource for the Atlanta area.

'Our residents have taxed themselves to fund the $4 billion Clean Water Atlanta Program,' a program that has greatly improved the quality of water downstream, says Mayor Shirley Franklin.

The presiding judge has indicated that he does not plan to rule immediately on the issue, which has fed a decades-long water war between Georgia, Florida and Alabama.
