City Requests Extension on Consent Decree Work
Mayor Kasim Reed and Commissioner Robert Hunter have asked regulatory agencies and
the federal court for a 15-year extension on the deadline for the
First Amended Consent Decree (large PDF).
The City presented a formal request to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Georgia
Environmental Protection Division and the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper asking the the 2014
deadline for work on the Consent Decree be extended to 2020.

DWM Pursues McDaniel Branch Stream Restoration
DWM’s Bureau of Watershed Protection has partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build two constructed wetlands on a City-owned Greenway property near Arthur Langford Park in the McDaniel Branch Subwatershed. The wetlands will provide water quality treatment and stormwater control for 197 acres in southeast Atlanta. The Army Corps of Engineers is providing funding for the project; DWM will provide the technical expertise to create the wetlands.

City of Atlanta Restarts Adopt-a-Stream Program
The Adopt-a-Stream program encourages citizen volunteers to help monitor and protect water quality in our streams. Volunteers are trained to collect water quality samples to record a variety of chemical, physical, and biological parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, bacteria levels and aquatic insect population.

DWM’s Office of Water Efficiency Wins Educator Award
The Office of Water Efficiency has received the 2010 Project WET Educator of the Year Award. The judges honored DWM for a series of water conservation and education seminars conducted in several City of Atlanta elementary schools beginning in 2009, praising the teaching team for its “hands-on approach” that allows students to learn by doing. Project WET is a national K-12 water education curriculum.

Officials Tour South River Tunnel
On Friday, January 29, Chief Operating Officer Peter Aman and DWM Commissioner Robert Hunter led Congressman John Lewis, several City Council members and staffers on a tour of the South River Tunnel Project. Councilpersons Carla Smith, Natalyn Archibong, Michael Julian Bond, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Felicia Moore, Alex Wan and Aaron Watson were on hand to tour the 180-foot-deep construction shaft and tunnel entrance.

March 15-21 is Fix-A-Leak Week. The City of Atlanta and EPA’s WaterSense program encourage customers to look for and repair water leaks in their homes and businesses. Doing so saves water and results in lower water/sewer bills.
