Adopt-A-Stream
Adopt-a-Stream (AAS) is a program that seeks to raise public awareness of water quality issues and enlist the support of citizen volunteers to monitor and protect our rivers and streams.
Through the Adopt-a-Stream program, citizens can be trained to collect water quality samples to assess a variety of chemical, physical, and biological parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, bacteria levels, and aquatic insect populations. Once trained, volunteers can monitor the health of their stream by regularly collecting water quality information, report any problems they find to the City, and post their data on the Georgia Adopt-a-Stream website. The City of Atlanta provides free training and the supplies needed for stream sampling and monitoring.
The Adopt-a-Stream program provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to take active role in the stewardship of our watersheds and protection of our water resources. To find out more about the program and how to get started contact Andrew Walter at awalter@atlantaga.gov or 404-546-1253.
See the Georgia Adopt-a-Stream site for a schedule of upcoming workshops, training manuals, a map of water quality monitoring sites with data and lots more.
