Bureau of Watershed Protection
Regional Cooperation

Political boundaries are rarely useful for managing water quality as they tend to be disconnected from the natural boundaries. In an effort to promote regional coordination of water resources, the City of Atlanta is part of the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District was signed into law on April 5, 2001 (2001 S.B. 130) and developed regional and watershed specific plans for stormwater management, wastewater management and water supply and conservation in a 16-county area composed of: Bartow, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding, Rockdale and Walton counties.

The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District Act created a planning entity dedicated to developing comprehensive regional and watershed-specific plans to be implemented by local governments in the District. These plans will protect water quality and public water supplies in and downstream of the region, protect recreational values of the waters in and downstream of the region, and minimize potential adverse impacts of development on waters in and downstream of the region.
