City of Atlanta Under Level 1 Drought Response

State of Georgia Issues Level 1 Drought Declaration April 28, 2026

The State of Georgia has issued a Level 1 Drought Response for parts of the state, including metro Atlanta, due to continued dry weather and below-average rainfall.

A Level 1 declaration is the earliest stage of the state’s drought response plan and serves as a proactive step to encourage voluntary water conservation before conditions worsen.

Do Your Part to Help Conserve Water!
• Limiting outdoor watering, especially during peak daytime hours
• Running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads
• Turning off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving

Check for Leaks and Save Water
Simple checks around your home can help prevent water waste and reduce your bill. Use the tips below to identify potential leaks:

• Toilets: Listen for running water and try the food coloring test to detect silent leaks. If a leak is found, consider upgrading to a low-flow toilet to save water and money.

• Showerheads: Turn on the shower and check for drips or irregular spray patterns. A quick fix, such as tightening connections or using plumber’s tape, can save gallons of water.

• Faucets: Check all indoor and outdoor faucets for drips. Be sure to inspect kitchen and bathroom fixtures, outdoor spigots, and your dishwasher connections.

• Water Heater: Look for signs of leakage around the base of the tank, including pooling water, rust, or other visible issues.

• Irrigation System: Inspect for broken sprinkler heads or misdirected nozzles. Consider scheduling an irrigation audit to improve efficiency.

State officials continue to monitor drought conditions, while DWM works with partners to maintain reliable service and promote water conservation. Atlanta’s drinking water remains safe and meets or exceeds all federal and state standards.
