McDaniel Street CSO
The
McDaniel Street CSO Facility is located at 400 Manford Road between
Hillsdale Drive and Interstate 75 in a primarily residential
area. Constructed in the mid-1980s, the McDaniel Street CSO
Facility serves an East Area combined sewershed of
approximately 968.0 acres and has a maximum overflow capacity
of 660 million gallons per day (mgd). Grit is removed from dry weather flow (less than 7.5 mgd)
before being routed to the South River Water Reclamation Center
(WRC) for further treatment. All wet weather flow (7.5 mgd-660 mgd)
is routed through the CSO Facility before being sent to the
north branch of the South River. Flow (7.5 mgd-240 mgd) is disinfected and screened at the CSO Facility prior
to capture and storage in a 6-million gallon concrete basin.
Stored flow is returned to the sanitary system for advanced
treatment at the South River WRC. Flow that exceeds screening
capacity is disinfected and bypassed into a channel that leads
to the north branch of the South River. Disinfection by sodium
hypochlorite injection occurs upstream of the facility to ensure
bacteria and pathogen destruction with minimal chlorine residual
prior to final discharge. Sodium hypochlorite disinfection
was implemented at this facility in January 2002. This included
construction of a 3,300-square-foot (sf) chemical building that houses three 20,000-gallon hypochlorite
storage tanks, two constant speed adjustable stroked chemical
metering pumps for small dose demand events, and two 145-gpm
centrifugal pumps for chemical transfer during high dose demand
events.
