Intrenchment Creek WRC

The Intrenchment Creek WRC is located at 1510 Key Road, near the inter-section of Key Road and Bouldercrest Road in southeast Atlanta. The facility provides wastewater treatment for the northern half of the South River sewer service area which encompasses portions of Atlanta and a small portion of DeKalb County. Treated wastewater is conveyed to the South River WRC for further treatment before being discharged to the Chattahoochee River under a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit.

The Intrenchment Creek WRC was constructed in 1936. Recent upgrades include flow maximization and water reuse improvements, emergency generator and backup power, headworks modifications and dewatering centrifuges.

The treatment process at Intrenchment Creek WRC begins with the removal of larger solids and smaller floatable and settleable solids. Removed solids are landfilled. Next, trickling filters provide biological treatment and reduce the concentration of organic and chemical pollutants. After biological treatment, the remaining suspended solids are removed. After the removal of suspended solids, the partially treated wastewater is conveyed to the South River WRC for further treatment in BPR tanks (see description of South River WRC). The solids that are removed during the wastewater treatment process at Intrenchment Creek WRC are reduced in the digestion process before being dewatered and disposed of in a landfill.
