Peachtree sewer project Phase II begins
March 13, 2009 — Phase II of the Peachtree Corridor Sewer Improvement project, a series of rehabilitation activities designed to extend the life of the sanitary sewer system in the corridor, will begin Monday, March 16, at 7 pm. The first part of the project, which involves inspection of the sewers and assessment of manholes along Peachtree Road from Roxboro Road to Georgia 400, is scheduled to be completed by Friday, April 9. Rehabilitation will begin afterward and continue until the end of May. Contractors on the project will be using cured-in-place-pipe lining, in which a flexible liner is installed in the existing sewer pipe. The lining is then “cured” using steam or hot water to produce a rigid structure with a design life of 50 or more years. The method is preferred for work in heavily developed areas because it does not necessitate extensive trenching and poses the least disruption to the community’s extensive underground utility systems The work will be performed between 7 pm and 4:30 am in order to minimize disruption to the businesses and residents of the area. There will be temporary lane closures after normal business hours, while the sewers in this area are inspected and rehabilitated. The third and final phase of the project, which will affect Peachtree Road from East Shadowlawn Avenue to Maple Drive, will be completed in the future in conjunction with a Georgia Department of Transportation road-widening project The rehabilitation project is part of the City’s capacity relief efforts, which are mandated by a federal Consent Decree. Part of the $4 billion Clean Water Atlanta Program, the sewer rehabilitation projects are designed to overhaul the City’s aging sewer infrastructure and provide residents and downstream communities with the cleanest, safest drinking water possible at the lowest possible cost.
