City begins Phase II of Peachtree Sewer Project

October 13, 2009 – Commissioner Rob Hunter has announced that the second part of Phase II of the Peachtree Corridor Sewer Improvement Project, a series of rehabilitation activities designed to extend the life of the sanitary sewer system in the corridor, will begin Wednesday, October 14, at 7 pm. The project will commence with the inspection and rehabilitation of the sewers along Peachtree Road from Georgia 400 to Wieuca Road. It is scheduled to be completed by Sunday, November 18.

The work will be performed between the hours of 7 pm and 4:30 am, Sunday through Thursday in order to minimize disruption to the businesses and residents of the area. It will involve temporary lane closures after normal business hours.

The rehabilitation methods employed for this project include:
· Cured-in-place-pipe lining, in which a flexible liner is installed in the existing sewer pipe. The lining is then “cured” using steam or hot water to produce a rigid structure with a design life of 50 or more years. This method is preferred for work in heavily developed areas because it does not necessitate extensive trenching and poses the least disruption to the community’s extensive underground utility systems.
· Main line point repair, which involves repair to the main line sewer prior to the installation of cured-in-place-pipe.
· Sewer abandonment, in which unused main line sewers are grout filled.

The rehabilitation is part of the City’s capacity relief efforts, mandated by the Consent Decrees. The sewer rehabilitation program is part of the $4 billion Clean Water Atlanta program designed to overhaul the City’s aging water and sewer infrastructure and provide residents and downstream communities with clean, safe drinking water.
