Sewer Rehabilitation at Piedmont and Peachtree

January 26, 2007

The City will begin the month-long Piedmont Road Sewer Capacity Improvement Project on January 29 and is urging residents and motorists in the area to use caution in the area until the project’s completion. During the project, the existing 10-inch sewer pipe that runs down Piedmont Road from the Lenox Connector/Mathieson Drive intersection to within about 670 feet of Peachtree Road will be replaced with a 15-inch pipe that will be extended south toward Peachtree Road. The larger pipe is necessary to provide sewer capacity to support growth in the area and eliminate sewer overflows.

The project will not affect drinking water, and there will be no interruption of service.

During the project, crews will:

  • Use pipe-bursting, a trenchless method of pipe reconstruction, to replace approximately 1,000 linear feet of sewer line
  • Install approximately 125 linear feet of new 15-inch pipe; and
  • Construct six new manholes.

Crews will work around the clock in order to complete the project in the shortest time frame. During the work, traffic on Piedmont Road will be limited to two southbound lanes and one northbound lane. Officers from the Atlanta Police Department will be present around the clock to direct traffic. All businesses will remain open for the project’s duration; however left-hand turns will be prohibited. A detailed traffic pattern report can be found here (pdf, 14KB). For information on Buckhead’s free shuttle, “the buc,” or on traffic alternatives, please visit the Buckhead Uptown Connection.

The Piedmont Road Sewer Capacity Improvement Project is part of the $3.9 billion Clean Water Atlanta Program to overhaul the City’s water and wastewater infrastructure and ensure clean, safe drinking water for Atlantans a nd our downstream neighbors.

“We understand that this project is going to create enormous inconvenience for residents and business owners and their customers,” said Commissioner Rob Hunter. “We will do everything possible to minimize the disruption, and we appreciate their patience as we undertake this critical project.”
