Valve and Hydrant Program

Project Overview
The Valve & Hydrant Program, a three-year project, will ensure that all valves and fire hydrants in the City of Atlanta, City of Sandy Springs and unincorporated south Fulton County are fully operational and reliable.

There are roughly 95,000 valves and hydrants in the City’s water system, and these assets are critical to both public safety and water system reliability.
Under this program, each valve or hydrant will be located, entered into a Global Positioning System (GPS) database for future access by the Bureau of Drinking Water and maintained/ repaired as necessary.

Locating and documenting the water system assets will allow the Department to provide high-quality and more efficient service to our customers. For example, in the event of a water main break, DWM crews will be able to quickly locate valves, repair as necessary and prevent a prolonged service disruption to our customers.

Any water loss will be minimal, but some loss can occur when fire hydrants are tested. Some customers may experience a brief period of discolored water. Work may also result in minor traffic disruptions, including a single lane closure near inspected hydrants.
 
Current Project Update
Department of Watershed Management will continue the assessment, testing and repair of the City’s approximately 48,000 underground water valves and 24,000 fire hydrants in order to provide better service efficiency and ensure that all water system assets are in prime working condition.

On Tuesday, June 1, contractor crews will begin valve and hydrant location, testing and repair throughout Downtown and Midtown, starting on 14th Street between Peachtree Street and I-75/I-85.

The Downtown/Midtown work area is bordered by 14th Street on the north, Decatur Street on the south, Piedmont Ave to the east, and Marietta Street to the west. See attached map.

This work may result in temporary single lane closures along affected streets. Motorists are advised to seek alternative parking while crews are working on their street.

Crews will work between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Downtown/Midtown portion of the Valves and Hydrants Project will last approximately five months.

The three-year Valves and Hydrants Project, which began in May 2009, will identify and examine the condition of all water system assets, enter the locations into a GIS database, and provide maintenance and repair as needed.
