DWM begins emergency response training sessions
The Department of Watershed Management has begun holding monthly
emergency response training sessions designed to highlight various
scenarios in a “tabletop” format. The sessions involve DWM staff
representing safety and security, drinking water and communications,
and are designed to ensure that everyone is aware of and knowledgeable
about the Department’s Emergency Response Plan.
The initial exercise involved potential contamination of one of
the Jett Ferry water tanks. The scenario changes as the exercise
progresses, and participants must make informed decisions about
matters such as protection of the public health, response protocols,
etc. The scenarios are designed to get progressively more complicated
as the sessions continue.
Departmental managers and supervisors also are participating in
National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command
System training under a U.S. Department of Homeland Security mandate.
“Clean, safe drinking water is the most critical service the City
provides,” says Marie Shadden, former Director of Safety and Security for
DWM. “These exercises help us put potential problems into perspective
so that, if there is ever a serious emergency, our reactions will
be immediate and appropriate.”
