Home Adopt-A-Drain

Adopt-A-Drain

City of Atlanta Adopt-A-Drain Program

Thank you for your interest in adopting one or more of Atlanta’s storm drains (also called catch basins). By pledging to keep your storm drain free of leaves and debris, you are joining your neighbors in helping to protect the environment, manage stormwater, minimize flooding, and report infrastructure malfunctions and issues.

How Do I Adopt a Drain?
Sign and submit an Adopt-A-Drain Sign-up Form and Volunteer Adoption Commitment. You can also apply in person, by email or by mail to:

Robert Thomson
City of Atlanta, Department of Watershed Management
72 Marietta Street NW, 8th Floor,
Atlanta, GA 30303
Email: RThomson@AtlantaGA.gov

City staff will contact you regarding orientation and training, and to provide you with an Adopt-A-Drain “Start-Up Kit.”

Start-Up Kit Includes The Following Materials For Maintaining Storm Drains

  • Gloves
  • Broom
  • Rake
  • Trash or Yard Waste Bags
  • Safety Vest and Safety Glasses

Please follow these instructions and safety tips before cleaning your storm drain

  • If possible, clear the drain before it starts raining.
  • Never try to lift the drain grate.
  • Use a rake, broom, or shovel, not your hands.
  • Clear from the sidewalk, not the street.
  • Wear reflective clothing so vehicles can see you.
  • Always wear gloves and be careful of sharp objects!
  • Put leaves and other natural material in a compost bin or bag and put in the trash. Put trash in the garbage bin.

Medical waste or needles? Construction debris? Toxic materials? Report any issues to the City’s Customer Service Center, ATL311 on the web (or dial 3-1-1).
Please be careful while working in the street! Remember, you have volunteered to adopt this drain at your own risk.

Free Tools and Training
We invite drain adopters to periodic events during the year where they can receive drain cleaning trainings and free tools and supplies. Please keep an eye on your email for notification of these events.
