City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management Investigating Water Quality Concerns Reported by Federal Bureau of Prisons

ATLANTA – The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) was contacted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Atlanta and advised of a water quality issue related to elevated levels of arsenic for some water quality samples they independently took in November and December 2018.

On Monday, February 4, 2019 DWM notified the Environmental Protection Division and initiated sampling of the distribution system. Per the Environmental Protection Division, “There is no violation that has been issued to the City of Atlanta Water System regarding the Arsenic Rule at this time.”

DWM is cooperating with federal authorities to help determine the cause of this facility-related issue. At this time, there is no evidence that the contamination is coming from the City of Atlanta Water System. The required annual samples for the City’s drinking water system have shown no detection of arsenic.
