Green Infrastructure Design Challenge

The Department of Watershed Management is excited to announce the winners of the Green Infrastructure (GI) Design Challenge! The GI Design Challenge was created to spark interest in developing creative solutions to some of the City’s water quality and infrastructure challenges in a friendly and competitive manner. The difference with this Challenge is that the winning teams get to take their concept visions all the way through final design. In addition, winners will be highlighted in a virtual celebration, through social media, and in-person when the time is right. If you’re not sure what green infrastructure is or want to learn more about the City’s Green Infrastructure Strategic Action Plan, CLICK HERE.

Green Infrastructure Design Challenge Overview
The GI Design challenge is a continuation on the City’s commitment to implementing innovative solutions to stormwater challenges within our watersheds. The rules for the GI Design Challenge were simple: engineering and landscape architecture firms were to engage the surrounding community (and include at least one representative on the team) to develop a conceptual green infrastructure solution at one of five sites throughout the City. These sites had been identified by DWM for their unique set of challenges in addition to their potential for creative solutions to improve water quality and reduce flooding. Teams were evaluated on innovation, creativity, and how well the project integrates into the surrounding community. The overall goal of the five projects is to maximize infiltration and storage of stormwater runoff while maintaining feasible construction and long-term maintenance costs. Once the final designs are completed, DWM intends to begin construction on these winning projects in late 2021.

And the WINNERS ARE…

1. Chastain Park
2. West Manor Park
3. The Outdoor Activity Center
4. MLK and Hunter Place
5. Continental Colony Elementary School

Stay tuned to @ATLWatershed for more information on the upcoming virtual celebration and future ways to engage the City of Atlanta in its green infrastructure efforts.
