The Department of Watershed Management Addresses Intermittent Odors Complaints from Neighborhood
Improvements at RM Clayton Water Reclamation Center Play Major Role

ATLANTA – The Department of Watershed Management (DWM) initially investigated and responded to complaints of intermittent odors originating from the RM Clayton Water Reclamation Center (WRC). The smells affected nearby communities and residents from Thursday, May 25, 2023, through Sunday, June 4, 2023.

The RM Clayton Water Reclamation Center experienced issues with the influent primary odor control unit and a breach in an air diffuser pipe within a basin. The basin was taken out of service and drained to complete repairs. Odor-control sprayers were utilized around the plant’s perimeter to decrease odor emissions further. In addition, new nutrients were incorporated to eliminate odors. DWM began to see significant improvements within 72 hours, and conditions at the plant have stabilized in the past two weeks.

DWM continues monitoring conditions at RM Clayton WRC and is dedicated to safeguarding the residents’ well-being throughout Atlanta. Regulatory compliance is a top priority for the department, and protecting our customers’ and visitors’ health and safety is essential. Treating wastewater to the highest standard possible is vital.
